Did you know mitoc has sea kayaks?!
Did you know that you can take them out on the Charles, Boston Harbor, or camp on the harbor islands, all without a car?!
If any of this excites you, sign up to learn how to lead kayak trips.
Prerequisites:
- Ability to swim in event of a capsize
- Intent to lead >=1 MITOC Kayaking trips this summer/fall. If you only want to do personal trips, this is not for you.
- Any kayaking/boating experience
- Physical fitness to be outdoors and active for 8 hrs and warm layers
Schedule:
May 16th, 2026
8:00am: Meet at the mitoc boathouse. Introductions, equipment discussion, etc.
9:00am: Take boats to river
10:00am: Start kayaking. Kayak down the river, through the locks, and into the inner harbor.
3:00pm: Get off water, and return to boathouse
5:00pm: Adjourn. You begin scheming your own MITOC kayak trips!
Lottery & Signups:
This trip will open April 27th, and the lottery will run on May 12th at noon.
I will be manually adjusting sign ups the hour after the lottery runs. The participant list will be final at 1pm on May 12th. The goal of this trip is to increase the volume of MITOC sea kayak trips. Priority will be given to mitoc leaders, those with the most sea kayaking experience, AND those with the most excitement about leading sea kayak trips. Prior sea kayaking experience it not required, but you should be comfortable on the water and in a kayak. If you have any questions, please reach out!
Other Notes
- We're in the process of reviving the MITOC kayaking program. If you're an experienced sea kayaker, and want to help lead this trip or get more involved, please reach out!
- Depending on weather, we might use MITOC's wetsuits and/or not go into the harbor. May can still be quite cold and windy, espeically on the water. If you're a fair-weather-princess, consider waiting til summer.
- Participating in this training does not guarantee you'll be allowed to lead full ocean trips in all conditions, but even less experienced kayakers can likely expect to lead flat water river trips on the Charles
- Consider getting involved in other MITOC boathouse events, including trainings!
