Join us for a hike along the 19 Mile Brooke trail to Carter Notch Hut, where we will see one of the most beautiful non-summit spots in the whites and enjoy a cozy lunch inside the hut! If the lake is frozen, we may be able to walk out onto it as well.

Trip details

  • 7.6 miles round trip
  • 1,900 ft elev gain (not steep, generally a gentle trail)
  • Start at the 19 mile brook trailhead near Pinkham Notch (Google maps pin here)
  • While the hike itself is not too challenging, multiple water crossings and varying levels of ice and water on the trail make traction and staying dry important. We will likely use microspikes the whole way.
  • BYO lunch and maybe a treat to share! We will enjoy lunch in the hut (as much as our turnaround time permits), which is open for self-service only, i.e., you bring your own food. If you want to bring a little cash, they may have things like muffins for sale, but don't count on it.
  • Forecast for Pinkham Notch here

Requirements

No previous winter hiking experience required, but you should be very comfortable hiking 7-10 miles with a pack and feel confident with your footing while crossing streams with potential exposed water. Some rain is currently in the forecast, so you should also own or borrow good waterproof layers.

Please budget for the following expenses: $5 trip fee, $20-50 carpooling costs, up to $15 for gear rentals, potentially extra if you want to buy food at a rest stop. If you are an MIT undergrad, financial aid may be available.

Logistics

Mandatory in-person meeting at MIT student center on Jan 8th after the lecture to discuss route, gear, and carpooling. We will follow up with the exact meeting location once the trip lottery runs. Cars should plan to leave Cambridge early on Sunday morning (likely around 5:00am).

We will need drivers for this trip! Please update your car status if you can drive others (passengers will chip in for gas/wear and tear). If not, please select “not driving” or “will drive self.” If you have selected “willing to rent," you must be prepared to rent a car for Sunday, including picking it up ahead of our planned departure time (MIT affiliates can get deals on car rentals, and rental costs will be split between everyone in the car).
