Purpose

Interested in becoming a MITOC climbing leader, but not sure what's involved? Come find out at this info session! You'll be able to meet potential climbing partners as well as current climbing leaders.

Trip date

Thursday, April 25 7-8 pm (after the social, concurrent with office hours)

Location

TBD (MIT campus - probably the MITOC office)

We are also planning to hold an open cabin the following weekend at Camelot so potential leaders can get recommendations if you haven't climbed with many current MITOC leaders. We'll discuss the open cabin / climbing groups at this meeting. If you're interested in the open cabin, make sure to sign up.

Why does MITOC need climbing leaders?

Climbing is inherently dangerous. We want to make sure our leaders are prepared to lead climbing trips safely. This also allows for prospective climbing leaders to co-lead trips with leaders and to later become a full leader.

Why should I become a climbing leader?

You'll get to know the MITOC climbing community better, help new climbers gain skills and confidence, and contribute back to MITOC. There are also some perks, such as:
- Subsidized food / travel during MRP and Circuses.
- Free gear rental from MITOC for official trips, including ropes, quick draws, belay devices, and bouldering pads.
- Gas subsidy at $0.13/mile. ($60 max per trip, limit to 1 car, cannot be applied to trips used for course subsidy).
- Course subsidy towards Wilderness First Aid certification (WFA, WAFA, WFR, WEMT) or Self Rescue courses.

What's involved in the application process?

You submit an informal "resume" summarizing both climbing and outdoor leadership experience, and 2 recommendations from current climbing leaders. The application is here, and more info is available on the primary MITOC climbing leader page.
