As part of the MITOC Women Climber's Open Cabin Weekend we will be leading an official trip on Saturday, May 4th. The trip is aimed at all self-identified women / nonbinary climbers who are experienced in a gym setting but are seeking lead experience outside (e.g. with the goal of passing an indoor lead test soon).

Skills this trip will address: * How to safely lead belay * How to safely lead climb

Please plan to attend a Technical Review Session (TRS) on Wednesday, May 1st, 6:00-7:00pm. We will review the lead climbing / belaying theory via Powerpoint and discussion.

Participants are welcome to come up Friday and stay at Camelot (MITOC's cabin), or Saturday morning. Either way, we will meet at Rumney at updated time: 8:30am Saturday, review safety information, and start climbing! We will wrap up ~6pm and head to Camelot for socializing and dinner. Here we hope you will meet other rad ladies in our climbing community via the Open Cabin. (If you are selected for the trip via the lottery, we will then ask you to sign up for the Open Cabin for logistics purposes.)

Saturday, May 4th is the primary trip date, Sunday May 5th is optional. If you find new folks to climb with Sunday, great! If not, know that the same leaders leading this Gym to Crag Trip will be glad to take you out Sunday and offer continued opportunities to practice lead skills. Groups will return to Boston Sunday evening.

Participant requirements:

  • Know how to top rope climb confidently. You should be able to onsight a 5.9 in any gym (aka a clean send without takes).
  • Know how to tie in using a figure 8 knot
  • Stoke and enthusiasm for leading outside!

Required Gear:

  • HELMET - required for all MITOC rope climbing trips
  • Harness
  • ATC Belay Device

  • Headlamp

You can rent harnesses, ATCs, helmets, shoes, and some personal gear (sleeping bags, pads) from MITOC after the TRS or during normal office hours. The office hours are on the calendar.
