MountainED Remote Medicine is offering an evening Wilderness First Responder (WFR) course through MITOC this spring.

This course is for great for anyone intending to spend extended time in the wilderness, especially leading trips, and for people who want more in-depth instruction and more practice time than a WFA offers.

What is WFR?

Wilderness First Responder is a more intensive introduction to backcountry medicine than the Wilderness First Aid (WFA) certification that many MITOC leaders take in the fall. It involves 72 hours of course time and two practical and one written examination.

What do we learn?

Patient assessment, chest & lung emergencies, bleeding & wound care, CPR & AED use, shock, spine & head injuries, musculoskeletal injuries, environmental emergencies, abdominal illnesses & injuries, allergies & anaphylaxis, diabetes, oxygen administration, and emergency & evacuation plans.

Schedule

The course meets for two weeks from Monday, March 4 to Sunday, March 17 from 6:45pm to 10pm on weekdays and 9am to 7:30pm on weekends. You must attend every class.

Note that most WFR courses meet for seven or eight days for 10+ hours a day, and this course is specifically designed to allow people to get the certification without having to take a week off of work/school.

Certification

Participants receive a Wilderness First Responder certification and a CPR certification, valid for 2 years plus a grace year for re-certification.

Cost

For MITOC members, the course costs $616.25. Those who have led two MITOC trips can get an additional $100 subsidy from MITOC (as long as those trips were not used for any other subsidies). The subsidy can also apply retroactively (i.e. you lead trips after the course). Email me with any questions about how the subsidy works.

Deadline

Since this is a small course, sign ups will be by lottery which will run on February 18. After that participants will have to pay a $200 deposit. Details about payment will be forthcoming.

Please feel free to email me with any questions.
