With Synnott Mountain Guides, we will be hosting a course AIARE 1: Decision Making in Avalanche Terrain.

When: This course will take place from 05:00pm-08:00pm on Friday March 1, and 08:00am-05:00pm on Saturday and Sunday March 2 & 3.

Where: This course will take place at Synnott Mountain Guides in North Conway, NH and practicals will be in the Pinkham Notch area.

What: AIARE-the American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education-is the primary provider of Avalanche courses in the country. AIARE 1 is the introductory/recreational course, in which students will develop the fundamentals of trip preparations, decision making, and rescue in avalanche terrain. You should take this course if you are a skier, climber, mountaineer, or winter hiker that spends time in avalanche areas. You will spend part of your time in lectures indoors, but most of your time will be outside doing practicals. This will involve winter hiking or backcountry skiing. You must bring all appropriate gear and clothing to move in above-treeline winter conditions to participate in this trip.

Cost: The cost of this course will be $365 per person. Email ndchu@mit.edu for venmo information.

Logistics: ONLY SIGN UP FOR THIS TRIP IF YOU CAN COMMIT TO ATTENDING. Commitment involves submitting your nonrefundable payment to Nathaniel Chu (ndchu@mit.edu). Once the lottery runs, you must submit payment within 3 days to hold your spot.

Given the tenuous situation with the Intervale cabin, additional logistics, like finding an Airbnb/motel or camping, may be required. This will have to be coordinated amongst the course participants.
