Prerequisites
Excellent fitness, previous above-treeline experience in winter, proper equipment for above treeline travel (full face protection), availability both Saturday and Sunday

Join us on an overnight trip in the northern Presidentials with possibility of above-treeline travel to nearby Mt. Adams!

We will depart from Boston on Saturday morning. Upon reaching the trailhead, we'll hike up to an RMC shelter (~4 hours), set up our overnight gear, and eat baklava. Depending on weather, we'll attempt to summit Mt. Adams (5800') on Sunday morning, with a potential excursion to Edmunds Col. We will then return to Gray Knob and head back to the trailhead.

Adams is a physically demanding peak with 4400' of elevation gain from trailhead to summit. The last 1.5 miles of the trail are above the timberline and fully exposed to the wind. Trail conditions will alternate between very deep snowdrifts and ice covered rocks. There is little margin for error. Participants must be sure of their fitness and confident in their ability to dress for the weather. This trip will require full body coverage with absolutely no exposed skin.

Note: the current forecast predicts extreme cold on Saturday (temps between -25 and -15F with wind chill). This trip plan may adapt due to the weather both before the weekend and while we are out.

The RMC Gray Knob shelter is $25 per person per night-- bring cash! We will first attempt to stay at the Gray Knob cabin which is slightly heated by the caretaker (probably above freezing, but temp is at the caretaker’s discretion), but will be prepared to overnight in nearby unheated Crag Camp with a sister MITOC group.
