Prerequisites
Winter Hiking Experience, Physical Fitness, Functional on Low Sleep, Not Scared of the Dark...

Join us for an attempt to see the sunrise on Mt. Carrigain (elevation 4,682ft/1427m). We will light the Signal Ridge trail by headlamp as we move towards the summit - a 14 mile and 4000 ft elevation gain day. This hike is longer than usual as Sawyer River Road is closed in winter and must be hiked/snowshoed.

This hike is suited for those with past winter hiking experience with several long hikes under their belt looking to practice an alpine start – a hike starting in the dark. With the first half of the hiking to be completed before sunrise, the following are required:

  • Experience with traction (microspikes, snowshoes)
  • Ability to stay the night before at Intervale cabin in the White Mountains to catch a few hours of sleep and pack personal and group gear
  • A headlamp with spare batteries (a good place for the spare batteries is in a spare headlamp…)
  • Ability to drive up Friday night and start hiking right away. We will plan to sleep at Camelot after the hike to catch up on the sleep that was skipped Friday. Start time will be around midnight.

As always in the White Mountains, no views are promised so if the jolt of a hiking in the dark doesn’t do it for you, this may not be the hike for you. Additionally, with inclement weather, plans to move forward with this hike may change later in the week if driving and trail conditions become unmanageable.
