12.4 miles, ~3000 ft gain Join us for a relatively easy but long (to make up for the non-winter till now) hike up Mt. Garfield. The hike will be about 12.4 miles long: a flattish 1.2 miles along the Gale River road which closes in winter, and a steep section along the Garfield Ridge trail in the last 0.2 miles. The elevation gain would be ~3000 feet.

We will leave early on Saturday, at 5 am, from the Student Center off Mass Ave since both the hike and the drive to the trailhead are long. Cars will meet up at White Mountain Bagel cafe in Lincoln, NH, to adjust packs, go to the bathroom, and fill remaining water bottles before caravaning to the trailhead.

The view from the top is supposed to be really nice with the entire Pemigwasset Wilderness visible to the south. We will require light traction - microspikes or crampons, and rain gear. Winter boots (which fit your traction) are required for this hike, either rented through MITOC or using your own. If bringing your own, and they have not been through a successful Winter School hike before, you must bring them to the pre-trip meeting at 6:30pm before lecture on Thursday so your leaders can OK them.

If you are doing a Sunday hike on the East side of the White Mountains (I-93 side), let us know at the pre-trip meeting as one of our cars will be returning to Camelot and doing another hike on Sunday; we can hopefully figure out good driving logistics.

Skills we will practice on this trip: Layering, keeping a steady pace for long distances while remaining comfortable, adjusting packs and identifying hotspots before they become blisters, the happiness triangle (eat, drink, pee), and enjoying the beautiful woodlands and peaks of the northern White Mountains!
