Trip date
Saturday, January 17th, 2015
Difficulty rating
Medium (above treeline)
Prerequisites
Ideally been on at least one winter hike, good physical shape

6.5 miles, 2,100' gain. South and Middle Moat Mountains are a scenic and wonderful part of the Southeastern White Mountains. This trip provides a great opportunity to practice above treeling hiking without being exposed to the long distances or higher wind speeds of the Presidential Range.

We will be leaving from the Parking lot off of Passaconaway Road on Saturday morning early (likely 9am trailhead departure). We'll follow the Moat Mountain Trail up to South Moat, and bag Middle Moat if we're feeling good. The Moats offer multiple spots for scenic overlooks, and places to stop and have snacks.

This trip is about 6.5 miles round trip, with about 2,100 feet of elevation gain. We will practice crampon and ice axe use, as well as layering for above treeline, pacing ourselves to keep warm but not hot, and of course the happiness triangle: Eat, Drink, Pee.

*Note: One of the cars for this trip is leaving Boston Saturday morning and staying up at the Intervale Cabin for the entire long weekend (East side of the White Mountains). If you are doing other trips on the East side of the White Mountains Sunday and Monday, let your leaders know and join the carpool!
