The Arnold Arboretum is perfect for someone who wants to dip their toe into the Winter School waters. Located conveniently in Jamaica Plain, just off the Orange Line, this 281 acre forest is full of gems--including trees that can only be found here and a few other places in the world. This place is a must see for anyone visiting Boston, let alone living in it.
The Plan:
The plan is to meet at the Visitor Center at 1:45 pm (we may leave a bit later--I will keep everyone updated. Either way, the hike shall conclude no later than 5:30 pm) and catch the sun setting over Boston. Upon the return to the visitor center, guests are welcome to mulled cider at a nearby apartment or to head home.
The Contingency Plan:
Rain or snow we go.
The Route:
The route is about 5 miles and contains three small hill summits. Although there are paved roads, the bulk of the hike will be on the paths. Even so, this is urban hiking, a Boston version of Central Park. If you want to get out in the wilderness and hear nothing but birdsong without another soul save your fellow participants in sight, this isn't your hike.
Objectives:
The objectives are primarily to offer a sweet peek into the wintry outdoors and in a majestic but convenient location. You'll get a safe idea of what layering is all about. If there is snow, we can learn how to snowshoe!
Gear: Hiking boots, feel free to rent microspikes if you've never used traction before and would like to practice, layers, water if you get thirsty after 1.5 - 2.5 hours hiking. Snacks if you want to bring them.
