Prerequisites
Some whitewater experience

Been to one of our whitewater instructionals and itching to do more? This is the trip for you! We'll be going back to the Fife for Deerfield Riverfest, which means we paddle Fife Saturday, spend the night in the Berkshires, and then paddle Fife again Sunday!

River info. We'll be paddling the Fife river, a beautiful 5 mile section of class II water in the Berkshires. We may also paddle the Shunpike section.

Logistics. This is a weekend trip. We'll leave between 7-8 AM on Saturday and drive 2 hours to the river. After a full day on the river Saturday, we'll head to Deerfield Riverfest, grab dinner, and camp for the night. Then we'll do it all again on Sunday! Expect to be on the river for 4-5 hours each day and back in Boston around 6 pm on Sunday. Bring water, two light lunches, and snacks to last two days. Wear clothes and shoes you are comfortable getting wet. Consider bringing two pairs!

Pre-trip meeting. 7-8 PM Thursday, July 30 at the MITOC boathouse. Bring any gear you are uncertain about.

Costs. ~$70-$90. This includes $30 for two days of kayak rental, campsite rental ($42/number of people), and gas ($35/person last time). Also budget for purchasing dinner on Saturday (or bring your own!), and camping gear. MITOC offers generous fee waivers for anyone worried about these costs. We will ask you to pay the rental fee and campsite fees at the pre-trip meeting.

Boat sizes. Boat sizes are approximately by weight. If you are near the border, you can safely size down (for a more playful ride) or up (for a more stable one). Here's a rough guide:

  • S: 90 - 140 lbs
  • M: 140 - 185 lbs
  • L: 185 - 240 lbs

Selection process. This trip is open only to people with some whitewater river experience! We will have a 10-hour lottery on July 20, and afterwards the trip will be first-come-first-serve. We may open up to the trip to others with lake/roll session experience if it does not fill up.
