Join us this Sunday for one of the most beautiful winter hikes in the Whites: Mt. Moriah! This is a rewarding route covering about 9.2 miles with ~3200 ft of elevation gain, offering stunning views along the way.
Pre-reqs
This will be an active, moderately strenuous day. We’ll aim for a steady pace with limited breaks to stay warm and on schedule. Winter hiking adds extra challenges (heavier packs, colder conditions, and shorter daylight hours), so being prepared is important for everyone’s safety and enjoyment.
We recommend that participants have recent experience with hikes in the 8–10 mile range and some familiarity with winter hiking. You should also be a Winter School leader or have attended MITOC Winter Safety lectures within the past year. If you’re unsure whether this trip is a good fit, feel free to reach out—we’re happy to chat and help you decide!
Logistics
We’ll have a required pre-trip meeting at MIT on Thursday at 6pm to go over plans, group assignments, and safety details. Before the meeting, we’ll send out a few short forms—please complete them on time so we can finalize logistics smoothly. Gear rentals will be available at the meeting if needed.
On Sunday, we’ll leave Cambridge at 5:30 am and stop for breakfast along the way.
Driving & Lottery
If you’re able to drive (your own car or a rental), please indicate this in your lottery preferences. Only sign up to drive if you can commit to the full round trip from the Boston/Cambridge area.
Costs
Expected costs include a $5 trip fee, ~$30–50 for shared transportation, up to $15 for any rented gear. We’ll split driving costs evenly using the MIT car cost calculator.
