Want to enjoy some of this good snow in the hills? Join us for an awesome backcountry ski trip at Doublehead! We're hoping to get 2 runs in, and can have lunch back at the cars in between laps.
The Doublehead ski trail is a 1930s era ski trail built by the CCC. From the trailhead, we will skin 1.8 miles from the parking lot to the top of the mountain (per lap), where there is a cabin that can be rented out from the USFS. We'll enjoy the 1500' drop full of double fall lines and blue-to-black steepness.
We will go over the basics of backcountry skiing, yet it is important that you have extensive downhill experience feeling in control of your skis even on black diamonds at resorts.
For those that are new to backcountry skiing please be aware of the following: - You will not get to “warm up on a green” and may have to start off on black-level terrain. Conditions are unknown and objective hazards (exposed rocks, bushes, etc.) may make runs narrower or more difficult than slope indicates. For instance, you may have to navigate a slope that has exposed rocks because of low snow coverage. Skinning up is equal in difficulty to a strenuous hike (i.e. a continuously steep uphill climb) with the extra weight of skis on your feet, so good fitness is important.
Please note: if the weather event brewing for Sunday evening consolidates as a snowstorm north of Boston, the trip leaders may postpone or cancel the trip due to dangerous driving conditions.

- Notes
- Will you be renting gear from MITOC? What boot size and ski length would you like?
- How many days of skiing have you done in the past two years? Any backcountry? If so, what?
- Rate your comfort with skiing the equivalent of Black moguls at a resort (1 = not comfortable/haven't done, 2 = a little uncomfortable, 3 = somewhat comfortable, 4 = comfortable)
- What was your last winter hike?
