Let's go hiking this Sunday!

Join us for a quick hike up Mt Pemi for the last weekend of Winter School. Mt Pemi is on the 52-with-a-view list and has fantastic views of Franconia Notch without miles of above treeline trekking.

This is a good intro to winter hiking, especially if you haven't gotten to go on a trip yet! We'll be practicing basic skills such as layering, traction, and the triangle of happiness.

You should have previous hiking experience of comparable distance and elevation. Please note that due to the winter conditions, this hike will be longer and harder than 3-season hikes of a similar distance. The hike is relatively short, but it is consistently uphill.

Pemigewasset

The Mount Pemigewasset Trail, part of the 52-with-a-view, is 3.7mi with 1.2kft elevation gain. If people are feeling up for it, we might also add at the end a brief jaunt up the first part of the Flume Gorge Trail for a 1mi trip, essentially flat (which has some really neat ice formations).

Logistics

There is a required pre-trip meeting on Thursday at 9pm at the Stratton Student Center.

We expect this hike to take about 4 hours, so we will leave Boston at around 6-7am. The trailhead is at the bottom of Franconia Notch State Park, which is about 2 hours from Cambridge.

Please budget for the following expenses: $5 trip fee, $30-50 carpooling costs, possible gear rentals (capped at $20 including trip fee) and eventual food you buy along the way. MIT undergrads are eligible for financial aid.

Backup: Rock Circuit in the Fells

In case we have bad weather and it becomes unsafe to drive to NH, we'll have a backup trip in the Middlesex Fells Reservation. The Rock Circuit Trail is 4.2mi long with 500ft elevation gain.
