We're aiming for a ✨long✨ traverse of about 17 miles, 6.5k feet gain. This will be a day full of four thousand footers, trail breaking, and some serious type II fun.
Route
Our route will start up the Carter Moriah trail to Mount Moriah. From here we expect to break trail for several miles over to Middle Carter. Trail breaking is hard and slow work (think sub 1mph speeds), you should be ready for a strenuous long day. We'll traverse the Carters and if time allows, continue up to the Wildcats heading down the ski slopes after dark. See the route here.
Details
We'd like to get an early start (at the trailhead by 5:45AM, departing by 6:00AM), so, to avoid having to wake up at 2AM the leaders will likely be driving up to NH Friday night and staying at the cabin in Intervale NH. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to stay.
This is a great trip for those interested in getting in some serious mileage the final week of winter school! The snow will be deep and the vibes will be high.
Requirements
To join this hike, you should have done a similar or longer hike within this last year and be very comfortable with your winter layering, hydration, and nutrition. Winning the lottery does not guarantee a spot on this trip—we require that participants have good fitness and winter hiking proficiency
This is a long, strenuous hike. We will be taking minimal breaks and working our way through unbroken trails and steep terrain. Come ready to put in some serious effort. Please do not overestimate your fitness; if you have not done a hike of at least 10 miles and 4k+ ft. of elevation gain this winter, this hike is probably not for you.
Logistics
We will have a pre-trip meeting on Thursday January 29th (time TBD, most likely hybrid on Zoom and at the MIT student center) to discuss the route, rides, and lodging. We HIGHLY recommend that if you attend this trip you should stay overnight either at the MITOC Intervale cabin or somewhere within an hour of the trailhead.
Costs
- $5 trip fee
- $0-15 gear rental
- $30-40 gas money
- $ for snacks at the hut (cash only)
- If you stay at Intervale cabin, there is a $10 cabin fee in addition to the normal trip/gear fees. Please let us know if this additional cost is a factor in your decision to join as financial aid is available.
