Extensive downhill skiing experience (can easily ski a black and comfortable skiing trees with bumps) and winter hiking experience. Backcountry skiing experience is a plus, but not required.

Come enjoy the result of the snowstorm on a BC ski trip on Mount Watatic this Saturday January 31st! Mount Watatic used to be a ski resort until the 1980s, nowadays gone back to the wild and offering nice backcountry runs.

Preference is for skiers who have some experience with backcountry gear, but it is not a requirement. Please reach out to the leaders if you need help deciding if this trip is right for you! You should be comfortable climbing about 3000' in a day and a confident skier in varied conditions, as we will navigate glades with tight trees and narrow trails.

For those that are newer to backcountry skiing, please be aware of the following: -You will not get to “warm up on a green” and may have to start off on black-level (steeper) terrain with many tree hazards. -Conditions are unknown and objective hazards (exposed rocks, bushes, etc.) may make runs narrower or more difficult than slope indicates. For instance, you may have to navigate a slope that has exposed rocks because wind created sections of low snow coverage. -Skinning up is equal in difficulty to a strenuous hike (i.e. a continuously steep uphill climb) with the extra weight of skis on your feet,

There will be a mandatory pre-trip meeting on Thursday January 29th at 5:30 pm at the MITOC office where you will have an opportunity to rent gear.
