- Prerequisites
- 1. Ice climbing experience OR winter outdoor experience + outdoor rock climbing experience; solid belaying skills
We are going to the Flume gorge in Franconia Notch. It'll be a top-roping trip (leading is possible if desired) not requiring prior ice climbing experience. However, the climbs are mostly vertical, therefore unless you're a rock climber it may not be that great as the first ice climbing experience. Prior experience with crampons is also desirable as the approach to the gorge already requires the use of crampons.
The warm weather in the forecast is obviously a concern. The gorge is well sheltered from the sun and right now the forecast (-5 C night, +3 C day) looks acceptable (with an early start) but without much margin.
