Do you like skiing but hate crowds? Have you ever wanted to ski a mountain that didn't have a lift on it? Do you want to taste snow as Mother Nature intended---straight from the sky instead of a dirty, dirty snowgun? Then you should sign up for this trip!
The trip plan is to start on the western face of Mt. Washington, ascending the clearing around the Cog Railway to the edge of treeline at a location called Jacob's Ladder. Then, we'll turn around and ski down (a climb/ski decent of 1.5 miles and 2000'). We might try to do it two laps depending on our time. We will show you how to use alpine touring skis and skins to ascend the mountain, and how to convert to downhill mode in order to ski down!
Note that this is NOT cross country skiing---this is downhill skiing! MITOC rents a limited selection of alpine touring skis, boots, and skins.
If time and conditions allow we may also dig a snow pit to do a snow study. If you have never done this or have no idea what this means---then we can show you!
This trip is intended for skiers who are comfortable on blue-black resort runs, but who have little or no experience backcountry skiing. The terrain we will be skiing will be bumpy and ungroomed, consistently blue - easy black in steepness, and may narrow down to 15' or so in spots. If you are concerned about your skills or experience, or you are a snowboarder thinking about doing this trip, contact James and Maia to talk it over.
Get stoked and we'll see you on the mountain! Maia & James
