Learn to roll a kayak with us! Rolling is the first step toward river confidence and more advanced moves, plus it's a great way to cool off in the summertime. We can't get out on the rivers yet, but we are offering kayak rolling instruction in the Alumni Pool on Fridays. No kayaking experience is necessary, although you must be able to swim and be comfortable under water. These lessons are targeted at complete beginners.

We want people to come to several successive roll sessions (it's generally necessary to learn to roll successfully). This year we'll post an individual trip for each session. We recommend signing up for three sessions; for fairness this will be the maximum allowed. The first three trips will open together, and the last three will open later in February.

Logistics: Friday 3/6 from 6:30 - 8:30 PM in the Alumni Pool (Stata Center). Bring a bathing suit and a swim shirt because the pool can be on the cold side. We highly recommend signing up for multiple (up to 3) sessions.

Costs: $9/pool session (this is to cover rental costs). Please pay here (trip: kayak rolling pool instruction, one week). We also sell nose plugs (highly recommended) at cost for $10. MITOC offers generous fee waivers for anyone worried about these costs. Please pay upon signing up (or let us know you are getting a waiver), we will drop participants who do not pay within 24-48 hours.

Boat sizes: Boat sizes are approximately by weight. If you are near the border, you can safely size down (for a more playful ride) or up (for a more stable one). Here's a rough guide:

  • S: 90 - 140 lbs
  • M: 140 - 185 lbs
  • L: 185 - 240 lbs
