This beautiful lake has a plowed (but not Zamboni-ed) loop trail that is 4 miles long and 20 feet wide. Some claim that it's the longest outdoor skate track in the United States! It is managed jointly by the town of Fairlee and a hotel, and conditions are closely monitored for safety and posted on their website: https://fairleevt.gov/lakemorey

The Plan

We will drive up on Sunday morning, departing from Boston around 7-8am. Enjoy the Winter School equivalent of sleeping in!

We will aim to skate at least 3 loops/12 miles total, and plan to be on the ice for ~2-4hrs. There is an area on the lake with benches for putting on skates and where participants can also leave snacks, water, and heavy layers for breaks between laps. Bathrooms are a short walk down the road to the hotel (but you'll need to take off your skates first!)

We can stop for food or a warm beverage at the hotel or in town after!

Requirements

You should...

• Be a competent ice skater to join this trip. This trip is NOT to learn how to skate!

• Preferably own comfortable ice skates (hockey or Nordic skates are best. Figure skates are more likely to catch on the cracks and bumps inherent in wild ice), but you can rent hockey skates at the hotel for $25. (https://www.lakemoreyresort.com/activities/the-lake/rentals/)

• Bring comfortable winter hiking clothing as you learned from Winter School (layers, windproof shells, extra socks to prevent blisters, and sunglasses are especially important for wild ice skating). We won't be halfway up a mountain, but we'll still be outdoors in the winter for many hours. It can get windy in the middle of a lake!

• A small pack for snacks and delayering while skating is recommended.

There will be a mandatory pre-trip meeting via Zoom on Thursday, January 15th, at 9:30pm.

Plan B

If Lake Morey conditions aren't looking good or leave it unable to open on Sunday (always a possibility), we may have a makeup trip at a free, outdoor rink in Boston TBD.
