Join us on Saturday for a hike up Mt. Adams, the best peak in the Northern Presidentials*. The plan is to go up Airline and to descend via Valley Way.

This will be a long, steep, and strenuous hike, so a strong level of physical fitness is required. Expect cold temperatures and moderate to high winds above treeline. We’ll be moving efficiently above treeline to stay warm and safe. You’ll need reliable above-treeline layers, solid wind protection, and full face coverage (balaclava or equivalent).

Route is here. We will be hiking 9 miles with 4500ft of elevation gain.

Prerequisites

Because this hike involves extended above-treeline travel in typically winter conditions, we’ll maintain a steady, moderate pace with limited breaks. This should not be your first winter hike. You should have completed at least two winter B-hikes with comparable mileage and elevation gain. Prior above-treeline experience is helpful but not required.

Logistics

A mandatory pre-trip meeting will be held Thursday at 6pm at the MITOC Office. Missing gear (e.g., microspikes, snowshoes) can be rented during Thursday office hours. We’ll depart early Saturday morning from the Boston/Cambridge area.

Drivers and Lottery

If you can drive your own car or are willing to drive, please update your lottery preferences to reflect this. Only mark “willing to drive/rent others” if you can commit to round-trip driving from the Boston/Cambridge area.

Costs

Please budget for a $5 trip fee, $30–50 for carpooling costs, any personal gear rentals (capped at $15), and any food you purchase along the way. We will use the MIT car cost calculator and share costs equally among participants.
