Butt sledding, weeeeeeee!
Join us this Saturday to hike a classic 6.7 mi (2.8k ft elevation change) loop around Mt. Tom, Avalon, and Field for some beautiful views and some booty-ful chances to try out butt-sledding. This is a moderate hike, while some prior experience is helpful, it is not required.
We'll begin our adventure from the AMC Highland Center, traveling up the Avalon Trail and then splitting off to the ridge. We plan to take a quick jaunt up the Mount Tom Spur to tag our first peak of the day. Venturing further to Mount Field, our second NH 4000 Footer, we'll then loop back to the small but mighty side peak of Mount Avalon and complete our lollipop-shaped loop.
We will definitely need microspikes, potentially snowshoes.
Butt sledding, aka glissading, is when one scoots/slides downhill. Waterproof pants needed or you will be wet, cold, and sad. Butt sledding is an optional and fun mode of transport - walking is about the same speed.
WEATHER DISCLAIMER: As the weekend forecast is up in the air at time of writing -- if the forecast changes severely for the worse [ie high chance of rain or high winds], we will reroute to the World's End Reservation for a 4 mile coastal, harbor-side frolic (and we can make our own warm winter beverages). There will be lots to do to prep for the rest of the winter -- practicing layering, using emergency shelters, learning which foods won't freeze solid... We will decide if we are taking this option before the pretrip meeting.
There will be a mandatory pre-trip meeting Thursday evening before the winter school lecture.

- What is your hiking experience? How much winter hiking have you done?
- Do you own or can you rent waterproof top and bottoms? (for sledding).
