Welcome to the first weekend of Winter School 2026!

Join Adam and Sam on Sunday January 11 for a gorgeous hike to Cannon Mountain with descent via Lonesome Lake. The views are great (weather permitting).

Trip is about 6 miles with significant elevation gain of about 2500 ft. We will take the Hi Cannon trail to Kinsman ridge trail up and descend Kinsman ridge trail to Lonesome lake trail. Time permitting, we will get to go around Lonesome lake and see the hut! This hike is shorter than some others, but it is steep with some scrambling terrain, but we will be ready to coach you through these sections.

This hike is most appropriate for hikers with some previous winter hiking experience or strong 3-season hiking experience who are excited to learn winter hiking. Fitness should be commensurate with maintaining a moderate pace over terrain that is steep and long. Please feel free to reach out to the trip leaders with any questions/concerns about preparation for this trip.

Mandatory pre-trip meeting Thursday 1/8 @ 6 pm at MITOC gear office (Stratton student center room 461).

We will require spikes, snowshoes, and insulated boots for this hike. Crampons may be needed based on forecast, which we will have a better idea about on Thursday. All of the equipment can be rented from MITOC if needed! Keep an eye out for the final list before the lecture on Thursday.

If you can drive your own car or are willing to drive a rental car, edit the “Lottery preferences” on your MITOC profile to show this.
