Do you want to better understand the risks of avalanches when traveling in the backcountry, and learn how to rescue others in case an avalanche does occur? Join us for an introductory avalanche course!
This course is a Silverton Avalanche School (SAS) introductory course offered by International Mountain Climbing School (https://climbimcs.com/education-training/recreation-level-1-avalanche-course/). The SAS program is not an "AIARE 1", but it has the same content and is recognized as an equivalent qualification by the American Avalanche Association. It will be a 3 day course (Friday + weekend) up in the White Mountains.
The cost will be $550 per person. You can pay directly at https://fareharbor.com/embeds/book/internationalmountainclimbingschool/items/411544/availability/1834102347/book/?full-items=yes&flow=825322. However, to avoid a booking fee, you can also book directly by calling (603) 356-7064 (ask for Lisa). Feel free to contact IMS if you have questions about the course and/or payment.
Qualifying MITOC leaders can receive a $100 subsidy, and you can use desk credit towards the cost (https://mitoc.mit.edu/events/courses). The cost includes the rental cost for an avalanche beacon, probe and shovel. However, it is recommended to bring and practice with your own gear if you have it.
You will need either AT skis or snowshoes. These can be rented from MITOC if available (more info at https://mitoc.mit.edu/rentals/prices). Please note that this isn't a ski/snowshoeing lesson: you should be able to get up and down the mountain comfortably. Please contact IMS if you're unsure.
We'll stay overnight in the Intervale cabin if we can get enough keyholders, and will organize a ride-share.
Hope that you’re keen and stoked to get into the backcountry!
