Come join us to hike Cabot, the northernmost NH-4000 footer! If you enjoy long car rides with awesome MITOCers, checking off your NH48, eating Cabot cheese on Cabot (fun fact: Cabot cheese is lactose-free), and snowshoeing amongst beautiful, snow-covered firs, then this hike is for you!
Route: ~9 miles, 2900’ gain, out-and-back, fairly moderate gradient.
Prerequisites: We don't have strict/inflexible prerequisites, but as a guideline, you should:
- Have comfortably done a hike (in any season) of 9+ mile hike with >= 3000’ gain in a single day in the last nine months.
- Have done a >= 6 mile long winter hike with >= 2000’ gain.
You also will need to be a Winter School leader or have attended MITOC Winter Safety lectures within the past year. Because Cabot is a 3.5 hour drive from Boston and sunset is at ~4:15pm, you should have the physical fitness and experience hiking in winter to maintain a 1.5mph elapsed pace. If you have any questions or uncertainty about your preparedness, please reach out to us!
Logistics: Cabot is a 3.5 hour drive from Boston. Depending on drivers, we will either be leaving Cambridge very early in the morning (~5:15am) or driving up the night before and staying at Intervale.
Pre-trip meeting: Most likely on Thursday evening via zoom
Cost: Budget $5 for trip fees, up to $15 for gear rental costs, and $30-60 for driving expenses. If you are an MIT undergrad, financial aid is available.
