Hardy wisterias like Wisteria frutescens can grow in NH, plus it's a native plant, making it a good choice for the northeast. Wisteria is a vigorous climbing vine and can grow on trees, though it can damage the tree if it gets out of control. Let's climb Mount Whiteface and see if we spot any wisteria!
Hike
Join us for a lovely, difficult hike up Mt. Whiteface! This 8 mile trail features 2,942 feet of elevation gain and beautiful views from the many open ledges off Blueberry Ledge Trail. The ledges are very exposed, particularly in winter, which means gorgeous views, but participants should be comfortable with scrambles and heights. We will be requiring microspikes and snowshoes for this trip (potentially crampons too - we will discuss at the pre-trip meeting).
Weather
We expect cold temperatures on Saturday with fresh snow from the day before (see Mountain Forecast). We will monitor the weather forecast and update participants before the trip.
Requirements
Participants should have experience with similarly difficult 3-season or winter hikes and have physical fitness commensurate with a steep climb and a ledgy scramble. You should also have confidence in your ability to manage your layering, either via past winter hiking experience or other outdoor winter activities. You will also need to have attended the MITOC Winter School safety lectures for the past season (November 2024, January/February 2025, November 2025) or be a WS leader.
Logistics
There will be a mandatory pre-trip meeting at the MITOC office on Thursday, December 18 at 6 pm to review trip details and rent gear. As there are no office hours the following week, leaders will facilitate gear return for participants following the trip.
Driving
If you can drive your own car or are willing to drive a rental car, please note this in your sign up.
Cost
Please budget $5 for trip fees, up to $15 for gear rental costs, and $25-50 for rideshare expenses. If you are an MIT undergrad, financial aid is available.
