measuring wind speed on Boott Spur

We will be hiking Mt. Pierce, Mt. Jackson, and Mt. Webster. Mt. Pierce has sweeping views of Mt. Eisenhower and the rest of the Presidential Range, so the hike should have good views if the weather cooperates!

Along the way, we will measure the wind speed for fun using a handheld anemometer (see photo).

Route

In honor of being trip #3000 on mitoc-trips (check the URL! mitoc-trips.mit.edu/trips/3000 👀), this is a hike of roughly 9 miles and 3000 ft of elevation gain. The route can be found here.

Weather

The forecast currently calls for temperatures near 20 Fahrenheit, with partly sunny and "windy" conditions.

Equipment

This is a B hike, so you'll need below-treeline winter hiking equipment:

  • Microspikes (and possible snowshoes, depending on trail reports)
  • Hiking boots that are suitable for the conditions
  • Layers, water, snacks, etc.

However, since we will briefly be crossing the exposed summit of Mt. Pierce, this could be a good place to test out your above-treeline goggle/balaclava setup!

Logistics

We will have a hybrid pre-trip meeting on Thursday, November 13 at 5:30 pm in the MITOC office and on Zoom. You will be able to rent gear you need for this trip during office hours on Thursday (directly after the pre-trip meeting) and Friday. We will be leaving from Cambridge on Saturday at 6 am.

Details will be sent out after the lottery runs.

Costs

Please budget for: $5 trip fee, $30-50 carpooling costs, any personal gear rentals (capped at $15), and any food you buy along the way. We intend to use the MIT car cost calculator and share costs equally among participants.

We reserve the right to select participants based on previous experience. You must have attended winter safety lectures to join this trip. Thank you for your understanding, and please email us with any questions!
