Come learn to whitewater kayak on forgiving class II water. We'll drive up to the Deerfield river for an all-day river trip. Beginner-friendly! If this is your first time whitewater kayaking, we'll teach you a wet exit, eddy catching, surfing, and more! If you were at our previous instruction, you'll have a chance to hone those skills.

Expect to get wet! Class II rapids are just bouncy enough to have a good time, but not dangerous.

Plan

Friday (9/5):

  • 6 PM: meet at the boathouse for gear outfitting. (optional if you were at the last instructional)

Saturday (9/6):

  • 7:30 AM: meet your driver
  • 9:30 AM (subject to river schedule): arrive at river and run shuttle
  • 11-3 PM: run the river!
  • 4 PM: return to Boston
  • 6 PM: arrive in Boston

What to bring

  • Clothes you are comfortable getting wet: no cotton, suggest long sleeves / wetsuit top if you have it.
  • Change of clothes
  • Whitewater gear: kayak, paddle, spray skirt, PFD, helmet, (and float bags)
  • Sunscreen
  • Snacks / lunch you can bring on the river (ziplock bag)

Gear Rental / Fee

If you are renting whitewater gear from MITOC please pay the gear rental fee upfront. Go to mitoc.mit.edu/pay. Under "Gear Rentals and Purchases" select "White Water Kayak" and pay $12. This fee is non-refundable and will only go towards future whitewater rentals if we have to remove people due to boat transport.

You can also use desk credit or a MITOC fee waiver (aimed at MIT students) to pay for the trip.

We will drop people from the trip who have not paid 24 hours after sign up.
