"Welcome to the Rock"! Join us and "38 Planes" (one or two cars) on our trip to Gander, Newfoundland (the White Mountain National Forest) to summit Mt. Whiteface and Mt. Passaconaway, two 4000-footers.
Our route will lead us through "Darkness and Trees" up Blueberry Ledge Trail to Mt. Whiteface, across the ridge ("On the Edge") to Mt. Passaconaway and a nearby viewpoint ("Me and the Sky"), then back down via Dicey's Mill Trail ("Somewhere in the Middle of Nowhere"). Blueberry Ledge Trail to Mt. Whiteface involves a couple of short sections of Class II scrambling, and is on the Terrifying 25 elective list. All told, we should be back at the trailhead and on our way back to Cambridge ("38 Planes (Reprise)") after having hiked around 11.5 mi with ~4130' elevation gain.
There will be a mandatory pre-trip meeting on Thursday, August 21st at 6:30 PM on Zoom to discuss the route, required gear, and logistics. Due to the scrambly nature of Blueberry Ledge Trail, we will be monitoring the forecast in the days leading up to the hike and may need to modify the route in case of inclement weather. We will be hiking on the fast side of moderate (aiming for a 1.5-2 mph elapsed pace), so you should maintain a robust cardiovascular fitness regimen and be confident in your ability to hike efficiently over rugged terrain.
