Did you know Mt Adams doesn't just have one peak? It, in fact, has 5! Mt Adams, Mt Quincy Adams, Mt Abigail Adams, Mt Sam Adams, and Adams 5. Our goal will be to hit all five peaks; this will involve short sections of off-trail boulderfield rockhopping, as three of the five summits do not have official trails.

To get to Adams, we'll take the King Ravine trail, which has sections of class II/III scrambling. To be extra silly, we'll be trying to cover all three routes out of Kings Ravine. Going up King Ravine, down Chemin des Dames, and back up the Great Gully Trail. We may also try to go through the subway, an offshoot of the King Ravine trail, with boulder caves to squeeze through. These three trails are all on the NH Terrifying 25 list. Depending on the group, vibes, pace, and conditions, we may shorten or add to our objectives :)

This hike will be difficult. The distance is only about 13 miles, but we gain almost 7000ft of vert going up, down, and back up a very steep headwall. The terrain is challenging with extensive scrambling, loose rocks, possible boulder caves, tight squeezes, and off-trail sections. This is not a beginner-friendly hike or a good hike for someone who is new to scrambling in the Whites. We will also be exposed to direct sunlight for most of the day, so it will be very hot. Appropriate sun protection and hydration will be very important.

Prerequisites

  • You have very strong hiking fitness.
  • You have gone on at least three hikes of over 12 miles and over 5000ft gain within the last year
  • You have scrambling experience in the White Mountains
  • You should be comfortable with very tight spaces and heights

If you’re unsure about your readiness for this hike, please contact one of the trip leaders.

The trip signup is first-come first first-served, but participation is at the leader's discretion. We will be making a final decision by the end of the day Wed based on your response.

Logistics

  • There will be a mandatory pre-trip meeting at 6:00 PM on Friday over Zoom.
  • You must have a hiking backpack for this trip that can hold at least 15L. You can rent a backpack and other gear at office hours Tuesday, Thursday or Friday.
  • As of now, the weather looks ok, but if it rains, we will likely reschedule. We are in need of a car to make this trip happen so priority may be given to those who can drive. If we get two cars, we will open up more spots.
