This is a Women / Non-Binary affinity trip

What is an affinity group trip? - We ask that folks self-identity with this group to help foster an intentional, empowering space for newer climbers as they learn to climb outside. Folks are welcome to sign up for any (or multiple) of 4 the weekend trips that they self-identify with, including the Open to All trip on Sunday (limit to one trip on this weekend). If you have any questions please feel free to email us at: climbing-chair@mit.edu

Are you ready to climb outside?! This trip is primarily geared towards

1) Experienced gym top rope climbers / belayers who want to top rope climb outside

2) Climbers who have some lead experience (eg in a gym) and want to learn more about lead climbing outside

Pre-requisites

We require that you know how to be a confident top rope belayer on an autolocking device (eg GriGri or MegaJul).

Open Cabin Notes

This trip is separate from the climber's open cabin and is a day trip. If you would like to stay at the open cabin you should sign up for that separately, and you will be responsible for making your own Sunday plans!

Pre-Trip Meeting

We ask that participants try to attend a pre-trip meeting on Thurs. 4/24 from 7-9pm at the MITOC office. We will have an Intro to Outdoor Climbing slideshow, do a gear check, rent out any personal gear you may need, and wrangle the rideshare.

Lecture Open To All

If you know you cannot make the weekend trip but want to attend the pretrip meeting for the slideshow that's ok! Just indicate in your signup that you're in it for the lecture only.

Schedule:

Required Gear:

  • Harness
  • Climbing helmet
  • Climbing shoes
  • Chalk and a chalk bag
  • Assisted-braking belay device such as Grigri
  • Note you can have your own gear or rent it from MITOC during office hour, or at the pretrip meeting. MITOC has harnesses, climbing helmets, and grigris available for rent.

School of Rock

We also encourage folks to use this trip as an opportunity to learn more about the MITOC School of Rock Program

Cost / Logistics

  • Please note there is a $10 trip fee for this trip (waived for undergrads)
  • More logistics information about rideshares, how to pay for the trip, and how to rent gear will be emailed to participants once the trip lottery has run. Please do not pay for the trip until you receive this email.
