Join us for a day of long-distance ice skating on Lake Morey, VT! Note that this trip is part of Winter Circus.

Lake Morey has a plowed (but not Zamboni-ed) trail that is about 3.5 miles long and 20 feet wide. Some claim that it's the longest outdoor ice track in the United States. It is managed jointly by the town of Fairlee and a resort, and conditions are closely monitored. Current conditions are a bit rougher than earlier in the season, but still skateable. According to their Feb 18, 2025 Ice Update: "The North end of the trail is closed. The trail will be a u-shape with mostly smooth ice. There are a few areas where the ice is quite rough so please use caution when skating over these spots."

Experience:

You should...

  • Be a proficient ice skater to join this trip. This trip is to skate distance NOT to learn how to skate. We plan to skate about 10.5 miles total at a decent pace, and be on the ice for ~4-5hrs.
  • Preferably own comfortable ice skates (nordic or hockey skates. Figure skates are more likely to catch on the cracks and bumps inherent in wild ice). Note that there are also hockey skate rentals at the resort for $25.
  • Have or rent comfortable winter hiking clothing (layers, windproof shells, and sunglasses are especially important for wild ice skating)

Please reach out to us if you are interested in joining, but unsure if you have the experience!

Plan:

The plan is to drive up on Saturday morning. This is a long drive (2.5hrs). We'll be enjoying a relatively late departure from Boston around 7am.

This trip is running as part of Winter Circus, so cars will return to Camelot (about a 30-40min drive) in time for the group dinner. (If you are interested in joining as a day trip and are a driver, reach out and we can try to accommodate.)
