Winter camping is great fun!

This Winter Circus, you'll have the option to camp outside at Camelot. This is a great, low-stakes way to try out winter camping (and if it's too chilly you can run inside to get warm).

We'll practice

  1. Setting up tents on snow (packing a base, using snow stakes, talking about the differences between 3 and 4 season tents)
  2. Melting snow for water (using the 4 season stoves, making sure you always have water in the pot, filtering and sterilizing)
  3. Staying warm overnight (going to bed warm, wearing layers to bed, using a hot water bottle)

Depending on time and enthusiasm, we might also try dig a snow shelter.

If you don't already have winter camping gear, you can rent from MITOC:

  • Warm sleeping bags
  • Tents
  • Liquid-fuel stoves

If you have questions, come to the pretrip on Tuesday or reach out to the leaders!

The winter safety lectures are a great resource for this, especially the one on Winter Camping

In addition, the Winter Cooking and Snow Shelters are worth checking.

  1. Do you need to rent gear? If so, what gear and when will you pick it up?
  2. Is there anything you'd specifically like to learn?
