Winter camping is great fun!
This Winter Circus, you'll have the option to camp outside at Camelot. This is a great, low-stakes way to try out winter camping (and if it's too chilly you can run inside to get warm).
We'll practice
- Setting up tents on snow (packing a base, using snow stakes, talking about the differences between 3 and 4 season tents)
- Melting snow for water (using the 4 season stoves, making sure you always have water in the pot, filtering and sterilizing)
- Staying warm overnight (going to bed warm, wearing layers to bed, using a hot water bottle)
Depending on time and enthusiasm, we might also try dig a snow shelter.
If you don't already have winter camping gear, you can rent from MITOC:
- Warm sleeping bags
- Tents
- Liquid-fuel stoves
If you have questions, come to the pretrip on Tuesday or reach out to the leaders!
The winter safety lectures are a great resource for this, especially the one on Winter Camping
In addition, the Winter Cooking and Snow Shelters are worth checking.
