Winter hiking experience (6+ miles, >3000 feet elevation gain) in the past year

Come hike Carter Dome! We're planning to hike a challenging 4k footer. Time permitting, we'll stop by the neighboring summit of Mt Hight to take in the panoramic views of the Northern Presidentials! This will be a 9.5 mile hike with 3,400ft elevation gain.

Route: The route will be assessed by leaders before the pre-trip meeting.

If conditions and timing allow, we may attempt this lollipop route: https://caltopo.com/m/8D91

Otherwise we will hike out-and-back to Carter Dome along this route: All trails: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/new-hampshire/carter-dome-winter-route Caltopo: https://caltopo.com/m/5LRA753

The distance, elevation gain, and winter conditions make this a difficult hike. Prior winter hiking experience is required. We will have the opportunity to fine-tune winter skills, including using traction (microspikes and snowshoes), layering, navigating water crossings in winter, and taking efficient breaks. If you are unsure about your experience level, please reach out to the leaders!

It's about a 3 hour drive from MIT to the 19 mile brook trailhead in Pinkham notch. We’ll be leaving Cambridge at 5am sharp to maximize daylight. We will need a couple drivers for this trip! Please update your car status if you can drive (put "willing to rent" if you can rent — MIT provides discounted car rental, and we'll evenly split rental/gas costs). https://mitoc-trips.mit.edu/preferences/lottery/

There will be a mandatory pre-trip meeting (likely on Thursday, Feb 6th at 5:30pm, to be confirmed).
