Join us on this 6.6 mile hike with 2,400 ft of elevation gain to the most confusingly-named peaks in the Presidentials! We will be hiking Mt Jackson, which is a 4000 footer and not named after the president, and Mt Webster, which is a 52 WAV, and not named after the dictionary guy.
Route
We will be taking this lolipop-style loop on Alltrails. There may be deep snow between Jackson and Webster, so we plan to bring snowshoes and be prepared for some slower going in that section.
Weather
The weather is currently forecasted to be in the mid-teens with low winds, clouds and snow according to Mountain Forecast. We will keep an eye on the snow forecast and may adjust our timing to minimize driving in the snow. Face covering is reccomended since it will be cold and there are some moderately exposed sections of the trail.
Logistics/Timing
Our pre-trip meeting will be at 9:05pm on Thursday night in the student center.
We expect this hike to take about 7 hours, so will leave Boston between early and extrememly early depending on the timing of the snow forecast. The trailhead will be at the Highland Center in Crawford Notch, which is about 2.5 hours from Cambridge.
Please budget for the following expenses: $5 trip fee, $30-50 carpooling costs, possible gear rentals (capped at $20 including trip fee) and eventual food you buy along the way. MIT undergrads are eligible for financial aid.
Prereqs
No previous winter hiking experience is required! You must have (or rent) appropriate gear as detailed in the mandatory lectures. You should have previous hiking experience of a similar distances and elevation. Please note that due to the winter conditions and possibility of needing to break trail, this hike will be longer and harder than 3-season hikes of a similar distance. Leaders will go over specific gear in the pre-trip meeting on Thursday.
