- Intermediate classic ski experience, at least two winter hikes in past year ~10miles & 3K elevation gain
Join us for a quixotic ski-hike journey to owls head! We will classic ski along the beautiful Lincoln Woods Trail up to Black Pond Bushwhack (not really a bushwhack) and leave the skis behind at the base of owls head, switching skis for hiking boots for the final ~1mile hike up to the summit. The hike may require snowshoes in spots - so good chance to use different types of traction. This is about the journey, so don’t look for a view on Owls head but we might find a glimpse of Franconia on the way up. If we make it to the hike that is… In total we will do ~15.5 mile (13 will be on ski's) and ~ 3k ft of elevation check out map
While the initial ski part moderately ascends, this will be a fun, but semi-challenging route on ungroomed trails over 6-7miles one-way. Intermediate classic ski experience is required and good physical fitness and endurance to winter hike ~15 miles.
Weather: It will be very cold! 🥶 -4-9 deg F and even less with wind chills check out weather
Update: snow forecasts this week suggest primo classic ski conditions - so get excited!
Backup Plan: If snow coverage is too poor to ski, we will hike.
Costs: Please budget for $5 trip fee, $30-50 carpooling costs, any personal gear rentals including skis will be capped at $15, and any food you buy along the way. We intend to use the MIT car cost calculator and share costs equally among participants.
Pre-trip meeting at 6pm on Thursday outside the MITOC office.
