Why go on a short hike and have an opulent dinner when you go on a long hike and have a non-pretentious dinner?! Feel free to sign up for the waitlist - we can accommodate more people, though it will require taking a second car.
We'll be hauling heavy backpacks into the wilderness with food to cook, stoves, warm stuff, etc. (destination TBD based on weather and wind) and enjoying a meal in the comfort of the great outdoors! Our plan is to have a long hike before cooking dinner and enjoying sunset together. Then, we'll hike out in the dark back to our cars and return to Boston. If you enjoy eating food in the wilderness, like carrying an extra-heavy pack, or want beautiful sunset vibes, please join us!
This will be an opportunity to practice sleeping in (we'll leave >>> 5AM), setting up stoves, taking sunset photos, and hiking in the dark. We'll coordinate dinner as a group and discuss plans at our pre-trip meeting.
Destination will be finalized based on weather, windy, and sunset viability. A few current options:
- Mt Roberts and Shaw (12.3 mi / 2.5k ft, most likely based on current forecast!)
- Galehead-South Twin (14.6 mi / 3.6k ft)
Dinner logistics: We'll be doing this potluck style, and everyone should be prepared to bring something to the dinner (we'll coordinate what people will bring on Thursday at pre-trip, but nothing will be particularly fancy!).
Weather: Saturday evening is looking pretty cold and windy (specifics depend on location, but likely mid-teens with zero-degree wind chill!). You'll need to have your winter layers pretty dialed for the hike and have plenty of extra layers for sitting around while we cook and enjoy dinner.
Logistics: MANDATORY pre-trip meeting will be at MIT at 9pm on Thursday January 30. We’ll depart Cambridge early Saturday morning. If you can drive your own car or are willing to drive, please edit the lottery preferences on your profile to show this.
Costs: Please budget for: $5 trip fee, $20-50 carpooling costs, any personal gear rentals (capped at $15), and something to share with the group for food / vibes. We intend to use the MIT car cost calculator and share costs equally among participants.
