Must have attended Winter Safety Lectures, comfortable with layering (10F and not moving around a bunch so layering will be key), stoked to get lost! (safely)

Are you finding yourself aimlessly following your trip leaders with absolutely no clue where you are going? Are you worried that if you were to hike in the Whites alone you would never return? Then this hike is for you!

This is a beginner land navigation course that will take place around Lonesome Lake in Franconia Notch. We expect total distance to be 6-8 miles and 1,500' elevation gain. There is only one climb (1.4 mi, 1100' elevation gain) before everything flattens out.

Trip objectives: 1. Learn to read a contour map and identify terrain features. Navigate by associating terrain identified on a map with what you see in the wilderness (terrain association). Understand when this method of navigation is preferred. 2. Learn to shoot azimuths (use a compass) with both lensatic and baseplate compasses. Convert grid azimuths to magnetic azimuths and vice versa. 3. Learn your pace count. Understand how your pace count changes with traction used and terrain. Understand how far your azimuth can deviate with no sighting object in limited visibility. 4. Use a compass and pace count to walk a prescribed distance and direction (dead reckoning). Understand when this method of navigation is preferred. 5. Use a compass and identified terrain features to triangulate your position on a map. 6. Use GPS technology (smart phone, GPS watch, GPS transmitter) to locate your position and direction. Understand the limitations of GPS technology in hazardous winter conditions.

This trip will cover 6-8 miles and 1,500' of elevation gain.

There is a AMC hut with fire and electricity near the lake.

Gear: In addition to the mandatory B gear (special attention to insulation for a cold day and not much movement), please bring any navigation equipment you own.

Logistics: There is a mandatory pre-trip meeting on Thursday at 6pm to discuss the trip. We will depart the trailhead at 0900 on Saturday.

Prerequisites: 1. Attended a past winter school safety lecture. 2. Have the physical fitness to ascend 1,100' comfortably. 3. Comfortable with layering so that you will be good with minimal movement on a colder than average Winter day.
