Beginner/Intermediate ice climbing for both those new to ice climbing and those who have ice climbed before. We will go over ice climbing basics at the start of the trip. During the week we will decide on the location. Either Arethusa Falls or Cathedral Ledge where we will set up some top rope climbs. Both are in the eastern white mountains, so an early start from Boston as usual to reach the approach before 9am. For the Arethusa Falls there is a ~1.5 mile hike before reaching the ice.
Saturday is currently forecast to have temperatures around 25F but be aware that ice climbing involves minimum 50% standing around belaying, so having your cold-weather kit dialed is a necessity. And just bring that extra big puffer and mittens to keep you warm if you don’t climb.
Please note that the pre-trip meeting will be Thursday at 6pm before the lecture to rent gear (ice tools, mountaineering boots, front-pont crampons, helmet, harness, belay devices in addition to any other winter hiking gear) go through the details and discuss the logistics. Feel free to email us with any questions.
