Prerequisites
Prior winter hiking experience, prior hiking experience of 10miles/3000ft in any season, fitness commensurate with a strenuous hike at a brisk moderate pace

Join us on Sunday for a hike to North and South Twin Mountains! This is a LONG hike of 13.5 miles with almost 4000 feet of elevation gain.

You can view a route map and check summit forecasts here and here. South Twin has an exposed summit with (clouds permitting!) gorgeous views into the Pemigewasset Wilderness, and North Twin has several nice view outlooks. The ascent is steady but long, and you should be prepared to move on the fast side of moderate for a full, long day.

For this hike previous winter hiking experience is required! You should feel comfortable with layering, managing your nutrition/hydration, and maintaining a pace on the fast side of moderate over terrain that is steep and long while carrying a moderately heavy pack. Depending on conditions, we will likely require both microspikes and snowshoes.

Logistics: We will need a couple drivers for this trip! Please update your car status if you can drive others to/from Boston. If not, please select "not driving" or "will drive self". You must be prepared to rent a car if you have selected "willing to rent." (MIT provides discounted car rental to affiliates, and we'll evenly split rental/gas costs). We plan to leave Cambridge very early on Sunday, and it may be possible to stay at Intervale Saturday night.

There will be a mandatory pre-trip meeting at the MITOC Office at 9:15pm on Thursday

Costs: Please budget for the following expenses: $5 trip fee, $30-50 carpooling costs, possible gear rentals (capped at $15) and any food you buy along the way.

We reserve the right to select participants based on previous experience. Being selected in the lottery does not guarantee a place on this trip. Thank you for your understanding and please email us with any questions.

Notes
  1. Briefly summarize (e.g., date, mountain, distance, elevation, weather conditions) the hardest/longest winter hike that you have done
  2. Briefly describe your experience with snowshoes (e.g., approximately how many times you've used them, and for how much distance/elevation)
  3. Have you updated your car status?
  4. If this is an option, would you like to stay at Intervale on Saturday night? (the cabin is heated, but depending on capacity, you may need to sleep in a tent outside!)
