Update

Switching to Blue Hills due to the very chilly temperatures forecast. Stay tuned on the trip page & email tomorrow for updates.

Want to practice your winter layering this weekend while frolicking in the snow? And tick off one of the easiest of the 4000 footers? Then come join us for a chilly winter hike up Mt. Tecumseh!

We'll start from the Waterville Valley Ski Area and go straight up the Mt. Tecumseh Trail to the top and back. The route is about 5 miles and 2200 feet of elevation gain. The trail is moderate and will require microspikes (and maybe snowshoes). Temperatures will likely be in the single digits with negative wind chill. We are looking for participants who have done difficult 3-season hikes and are eager to try out a winter hike in very cold conditions.

We’ll be using microspikes and potentially snowshoes, depending on the conditions, but previous experience with these traction methods is not required.

Please budget for the following expenses: $5 trip fee, $20-50 carpooling costs, up to $15 for gear rentals, potentially extra if you want to buy food at a rest stop. If you are an MIT undergrad, financial aid may be available.

We will need drivers for this trip! Please update your car status if you can drive others. If not, please select “not driving” or “will drive self.” You must be prepared to rent a car if you have selected “willing to rent.” (MIT provides discounted car rental to affiliates, and we will evenly split rental/gas costs). There will be a mandatory pre-trip meeting on the 5th floor lounge of the Student Center at 9 pm on Thursday. There will be time to rent gear during/after the meeting.

Plan to meet at the student center turnaround on Mass Ave at 5:55 am on Monday to load up the cars and be ready to depart at 6:00 am.
