Prerequisites
Two B hikes (i.e. in the Whites or similar terrain, not the Fells) or harder under winter snowy conditions during past year, good physical fitness to do at least 5 miles and 1800+ elevation gain.

We’ll be trekking a lollypop loop up Mt Cardigan (3155ft) in search of beautiful summit views! Sweet snacks abound in winter hiking but... we are going to crack that trend - everyone is encouraged to bring a favorite cracker or savory snack to share with the group.

This hike will have ~1800 feet of elevation gain and be ~5miles. But don’t let those numbers fool you, this is a challenging hike with potentially icy terrain and a summit area above treeline. Cardigan is a great smaller peak to get your first taste of above-treeline terrain before venturing into the higher summits!

Depending on trail conditions, you may get experience with snowshoes, microspikes, ice axes, and crampons. Goggles and full face coverings may also be required based on summit and wind conditions. We will confirm what you’ll need during the mandatory in-person pre-trip meeting on Thursday, Jan 9th, at 9pm following the lecture just outside the MITOC office (student center).

Requirements: Good physical fitness with recent hiking or similar endurance activity, prior experience with winter layering, hydration, and fueling. Having hiked at least two B-level (below treeline, at least 1hr from intensive care) hikes under winter conditions (or harder).

The Route: Beginning from the AMC Cardigan Lodge, we will start the ascent via Manning Trail, popping up above treeline for the smaller Firescrew summit, then traversing via Mowglis to Mt Cardigan’s peak and descending via Clark Trail, followed by the Holt and Holt/Manning Trails. A map will be provided during the pre-trip meeting, gpx file is available for those interested.

Costs: $5 Winter Hiking Fee + winter gear rentals capped at $15. We will split car gas/wear/tear costs among participants. Financial aid is available for MIT students (please save receipts).

When: We'll meet at the AMC Cardigan Lodge Lot at 8.30am, Saturday, Jan 11th, and start heading up the trail after confirming gear.
