We will be hiking up the flume slide trail to Mt. Flume (4328'), transiting over to Mt. Liberty (4459'), and then finishing by descending down the Liberty Spring Trail. We will start and end from Basin parking lot, for a total of about 8 (very steep) miles. The elevation gain is about 3500 ft, so participants should have previous winter hiking experience, be in good physical condition to maintain roughly a >1 mph pace in snow.
Here is a caltopo file of the route: https://caltopo.com/m/MA3E0
(If you are more used to AllTrails, here is a similar (but not identical!!! - different start point) trip route - https://www.alltrails.com/explore/trail/us/new-hampshire/flume-slide-trail-to-liberty-spring-trail-loop )
To ascend Flume Slide Trail, we will be using crampons and ice axes (so some prior experience is recommended, but not required). We will also be bringing snowshoes for use at the base of the trail. The temperature will feel very different at the base of the mountain than the peak, so be sure to have warm layers + windbreaker shell )coat and pants), as well as goggles + balaclava/buff/beanie combo, which fully covers your face. Please make sure you have proper winter gloves and proper hiking boots.
Logistics: There will be a mandatory pre-trip meeting on the lobby of the 5th floor of the student center at 9pm on Thursday, January 9th to rent or check equipment and adjust crampons. Make sure to bring the hiking boots you will be using in the trip.
Details will be sent out after the lottery runs.
We reserve the right to select participants based on previous experience. Winning the lottery does not guarantee a place on this trip. Thank you for your understanding and please email us with any questions!
Departure time: Sunday, 5 am, Meet with your driver and start driving to the Basin. Map showing the parking lot: https://maps.app.goo.gl/mas6waUNzyF5umki7
