Prerequisites
3-season hiking experience of at least 5 miles with 1500' elevation gain, or regular cardio/running.

We'll be summiting Waumbek (a 4000 footer) and Mount Starr King (a 52 with a View Peak) via a 7ish mile out and back trail with 3000 feet of elevation gain through open hardwoods. Waumbek is one of the northernmost 4k footers and a good one to be ticked off in winter rather summer if you're working your way through the list!

The summit of Waumbek is wooded, but the walk over from Starr King is beautiful and from the top of Starr King we can look to the south to see a vast plain and the entire Presidential Range. There is also a large stone fireplace left from a former shelter. The profile overall is fairly flat with a gradual to moderate ascent via Mt. Starr King (3,907 feet). Hiking time is roughly 5-7h return (+ breaks) with a ~3000ft elevation gain. The weather forecast for Saturday looks lovely, with summit temperatures around 20 degrees, light wind, and a chance of some snow. Route here.

Logistics: We will have a MANDATORY pre-trip meeting this Thursday, 1/9, at 6pm in W20-416. You can rent gear at the pre-trip meeting if you are missing any. We’ll depart Cambridge early Saturday morning. If you can drive your own car or are willing to drive, please edit the lottery preferences on your profile to show this. This trip will need a couple of cars!

Costs: Please budget for: $5 trip fee, $30-50 carpooling costs, any personal gear rentals (capped at $15), and any food you buy along the way. We intend to use the MIT car cost calculator and share costs equally among participants.
