Prerequisites
Must be used to winter layering and be a capable below-treeline winter hiker. Capable top-rope belayer.

We will go to Avalon and climb the ice there!

This trip is an introduction to steep ice climbing. Ideally, this is not your first ice climbing experience, but it is ok if you don't have any experience. If not, you should have a background in rock climbing to draw on. Experience with mountaineering using the frontpoints of crampons and swinging ice axes would be useful.

We will climb at Avalon, which involves a 2.5 mile approach with some bushwhacking. Depending on snow conditions, we might need to use snowshoes for the approach. If weather is too cold, we'll climb at Echo Crag.

Saturday will be very cold and ice climbing involves minimum 50% standing around belaying, so having your cold-weather kit dialed is a necessity.
