Who is ready for this double summit adventure on the first weekend of winter school?
We'll hike up to the East Peak of Mount Osceola via the Greeley Ponds Trail, then continue up to the summit of Mount Osceola, which on a good day has a clear 220-degree view including Mount Washington and much of the White Mountains!
Route: We'll start at the Greenlay Point Trailhead on the Kancamagus Highway, then hike up to Mt. East Osceola Peak. Then we can see how we are feeling. If everyone is up for a challenge and we’re good on time, we’ll continue out to Mt. Osceola and back. We’ll be hiking about 7 miles, with 3000 ft of elevation gain. A map of our route is attached.
This approach in winter is rated “Intermediate/Difficult” due to the snow conditions and potential for hardier traction, namely in the steep sections north of East Osceola and between the two peaks at the Chimney which could provide good crampon practice.
Weather Saturday will be cold (18˚F, -8˚C) and pretty windy (10-15 mph, 15-25 kph). Keep in mind the wind chill temperature will be even COLDER (10˚F, -12˚C). Check out the forecast for up-to-date information as the trip gets closer. Remember that the weather can change quickly and being prepared is key.
