Prerequisites
1. Hiking boots/shoes or trail runners (no sneakers) 2. Physical fitness for a trip of this length and elevation gain 3. Some experience either with rock scrambles while hiking or with rock climbing

We’re headed to Osceola and East Osceola for some nice viewpoints, close-to-peak foliage, and two 4000'ers! This is an 8.4 mi hike with 3.2k ft elevation gain — this is a challenging hike due to the length, elevation, and some steep scrambly bits.

Route:

We will start on Tripoli Road and head up the Mount Osceola Trail to Mount Osceola, and then descend a steep downhill and ascend a steep uphill to East Osceola, and then return the way we came. You can view an AllTrails listing here. Note that this route will include a significant steep rock scramble called "The Chimney". We recommend all participants have some experience with scrambly hiking or outdoor climbing. If you are not comfortable with a hike of this nature, it might not be the best fit for you.

Logistics:

We plan to leave Cambridge early Sunday morning (~6AM). If you can drive your own car or are willing to rent, please be sure to edit your MITOC profile to show this. There will be a mandatory pretrip meeting at 7pm on Thursday (October 10) on the 5th floor of W20 near the elevators (one floor above the MITOC office).

Note: The weather forecast is changing quickly, and it may turn out that Monday (Indigenous People's Day, MIT holiday) has the better weather. In this case, we may switch if enough participants can also attend Monday.

Costs:

Please budget for: $30-50 carpooling costs, any personal gear rentals, and any food you buy along the way. We intend to use the MIT car cost calculator and share costs equally among participants.

Sign-ups are first come first serve but attendance is at leader discretion. If we feel the trip may not be a good fit, we may ask you to drop. If you have questions about the trip or whether it’s a good fit for you, please email the trip leaders!

We may be able to take additional participants, depending on drops. If this trip shows as full and you are interested, please join the waitlist!
