Are you new to town and looking to get more familiar with the Boston metro area bike paths? Look no further! We'll be setting out on a chill flat morning ~15 mile bike ride to allow you to get to know three main bike routes around Somerville and Cambridge: the Somerville Community Path, the Watertown-Cambridge Greenway, and the Charles.
We'll meet outside the Stratton Student Center at 6.30AM on Wednesday, 9/18 to do approximately this route, ending at Cafe Faro near Harvard Square at around 8AM, where we can have a coffee and pastry together. You will then be on your own to make your way home (we end about a mile from Stratton on the same road). We may end up riding single file for most of the ride as the bikeways can be popular with joggers and commuters, but can chat at the cafe after. This is a no-drop ride, but we'll be aiming for a roughly 12mph pace.
Prerequisites
- You should be comfortable riding at least 10-12 mph for 1.5 hours in an urban environment (ie interacting with cars/joggers/other bikes), and have done so in the past couple months.
- You should have a functional bike of any sort except Bluebike. If you have a mechanical issue while on the ride, you will be expected to fix it yourself or split off from the group - we'll be in a urban area the whole ride so public transport access / uber is easy.
- Ideally you should also be familiar with (or study up on) some basic bike hand signals and calls.
Note that sunrise is at 6:27AM on 9/18 so you may need bike lights to get to Stratton.
Everyone is welcome to sign up, but as a Back-to-School initiative, we’ll be prioritizing MIT students for this trip, especially new MITOC members and students new to Boston. If the trip fills up and you’re an MIT student, please add yourself to the waitlist.
