Difficulty rating
Hard to advanced (pace requirements)
Prerequisites
Fitness and prior experience of a 12mi + 4k vert hike. Fast walking speed. Tolerance for rainy weather.

We will be heading up Mt Galehead and South Twin in the White Mountains, NH, at a FAST pace. Trip date is subject to change depending on the weather.

Route

We will take Gale River Trail and Frost Trail to Galehead Mountain, decend back to hut, Twinway up to South Twin Mountain, and then back to parking lot via Gale River Trail again. An Alltrails link is here.

Numbers: 11.3mi (18.2km), 3650ft (1100m) vert. Water refill is available at the Galehead hut.

Pace and prerequisites

  • We will be aiming at a 2.5-3mph moving pace for the gentle assending part, and 1.5-2mph for the steeper but non-scrambling part. (May slow down due to trail conditions after/during rain.) Maintaining this pace needs a fitness level higher then the route parameters suggested.

  • We will take regular but short break, 5min per 45min walk. Please make sure your food and water are easily accessible.

  • Rainy condition is likely. Will pick the day with less rain but be prepared to hike in rain. Link to Weather.

  • Hiking boots or trail runners are necessary

Logistics and cost

Trip date might be changed to Saturday (8/3) depending on the weather. We will leave Cambridge early in the morning, and get back the same day. Please budget for: $30-50 carpooling costs. We intend to use the MIT car cost calculator and share costs equally among participants.

Pre-trip meeting

Thursday (8/1) at 7 pm. Zoom link will be sent out before the meeting.

Sign-ups are at the leader's discretion. If we feel the trip may not be a good fit fitness-wise, we may ask you to drop it. Drivers may be prioritized to make the trip happen. If you have questions about the trip or whether it’s a good fit for you, please email us!

Notes
  1. Are you confident in walking fast on trails, potentially in the rain?
  2. What is a recent similar hike you have done (distance, vert, elapsed time)?
  3. Do you have a car/ are able to rent? How many people can you take?
  4. What's your time records for gaining 4000ft (in whatever way :p)
